Banning Toxics in Plastics

Hermit crabs are the ultimate recyclers—once they’ve outgrown their shells, they pass them down to their smaller friends. Surely the plastics industry could take a lesson from hermit crabs.

Plastics carry a cocktail of chemicals, and these chemicals are known to leach out from beverage containers and contaminate our drinks—they’re even linked to disorders and diseases like cancer and neurological impairments. These toxic chemicals are harmful to our ocean and affect plastics’ ability to be recycled.

The Banning Toxics from Plastic Bottles Act would eliminate these harmful chemicals from plastic beverage containers and set requirements for post-consumer recycled material while supporting local infrastructure to prevent pollution. It’s time for plastics producers and retailers to take responsibility for reducing the plastic waste they create.

We’re trying to get 10,000 people during Plastic Free July to call on our elected officials to support the Banning Toxics from Plastic Bottles Act. Add your name now.
