Take Action: Trump Proclamation Order Strips Essential Ocean Protections
President Trump has issued a Proclamation to strip essential protections from one of our nation’s most special ocean places, the New England Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument.
The proclamation lifts all restrictions on commercial fishing in our nation’s only marine national monument on the East Coast—threatening this public treasure while failing to address real problems faced by fishing communities. U.S. fishermen, who are key partners in ensuring our country’s fisheries are sustainably managed, are facing unprecedented disruptions to market access due to the impacts of the COVID-19 virus. President Trump should be working collaboratively with fishermen and other stakeholders to figure out how we can support both the fishing industry and conservation.
Americans care deeply about public lands and water. Conserving the special places in our ocean is not about a political party, it is about what we value as Americans. Please join us in speaking up for the ocean and taking action today.
Support for national monuments is bipartisan and overwhelming. Studies have shown that 90% of voters support Presidential proposals to protect some public lands and waters as parks, wildlife refuges and wilderness.
What’s at stake? The New England Canyons and Seamounts represent some of the most astounding and diverse underwater ecosystems in the Atlantic located about 130 miles east-southeast of Cape Cod . These canyons are carved thousands of feet down into the edge of the continental shelf, where it drops off into the ocean depths. Further out, the seamounts rise thousands of feet up from the ocean bottom, towering underwater mountains. This undersea landscape fosters a marine fragile and pristine marine ecosystem that includes deep sea corals, whales, sea turtles, and many species of fish.
This unprecedented decision by President Trump is a dangerous and deliberate step forward in the Administration’s larger plan to make monuments protected areas in name only.
