A Big Step for Sustainable Fishing

Our ocean provides protein for 3 billion people globally. That’s not distant—that’s dinner. Yet despite the importance of fish and fishing to people, economies and cultures, fisheries remain a challenge to manage sustainably.

The Fisheries Science Modernization Act takes a thoughtful and vital step to advance technology using environmental DNA, or eDNA, where scientists take samples of water and genetically sequence the organic bits of what we find in there to figure out what was swimming nearby. Passing this bill will establish national standards, expand workforce capacity, strengthen interagency coordination and support private-sector innovation.

Sustainable fishery management is more important than ever as pollution, warming waters, marine industry and fishing pressure threaten to push American fisheries to their limit. Take action for National Seafood Month and call on Congress to prioritize sustainable fisheries.
