Have you ever heard
of bycatch? It’s when unwanted fish and other animals are caught in nets and on
hooks. It can be deadly: wildlife like sea turtles and seabirds often
don’t survive after being thrown back to the sea.
Right now, the National Marine Fisheries
Service (NMFS) is proposing a dangerous rule that doesn’t require
the collection of accurate bycatch data, meaning scientists won’t get the information they need to study the full impact of bycatch. This
could lead to more overfishing and more depletion of vulnerable species.
Ocean advocates (like you!) rallied
together and asked NMFS to withdraw this terrible bycatch-reporting rule.
