Take Action to Stem the Tide of Ocean Plastics
Each year an estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic waste enter the ocean threatening marine life and coastal ecosystems. The United States makes a significant contribution to this problem and we need the Federal government to act now to protect our ocean.
The Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act provides a sweeping set of policy measures which would aggressively reduce plastic waste and prevent it from entering the ocean from the start.
Will you join us in telling your members of Congress to support the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act?
We need ocean advocates like YOU to help us put an end to the growing threat of plastic pollution in our ocean.
While our individual actions to reduce waste are important, we need more sweeping change to solve this issue. This bill would hold corporations responsible for the waste industries produce. It would require plastic makers and sellers to be accountable for the waste they create.
Not all trash is created equal. This bill would also reduce plastic waste by phasing out unnecessary single-use plastic products that are the most damaging to the environment when there are viable reusable alternatives available. Many of the items that the legislation would ban—including plastic carryout bags, foam food containers and drinkware, and plastic utensils—are among the top items found during Ocean Conservancy’s annual International Coastal Cleanup. These products are the most likely to end up in the ocean where they can threaten animals' lives, harm ecosystems and impact coastal economies.
Contact your representatives in Congress and ask for their support! Together we can take a critical step forward in the fight against ocean plastics.
