Take Action Against Single-Use Plastics in California
Each year an estimated 11 million metric tons of plastic waste flow into the global ocean, threatening marine life and coastal ecosystems. Right now we have an opportunity in California to help protect our communities, beaches, and ocean from plastic pollution by passing The California Circular Economy and Plastic Pollution Reduction Act (AB 1080/ SB 54).
The need to cut back on single-use plastics is more important than ever, particularly given the COVID-19 pandemic. Scientists have estimated that 129 billion face masks and 65 billion gloves are being used around the world every month. At the same time, a surge in takeout and delivery orders has increased the use of plastic bags and single-use plastic food containers, straws and cutlery. This massive increase in the amount of waste generated during the pandemic underscores the need to take action now to address plastic pollution in the ocean.
You have the opportunity to help California cut back on single-use plastic packaging and product waste. The California Circular Economy and Plastic Pollution Reduction Act will establish a comprehensive framework to reduce single-use packaging and priority single-use food service ware in California by 75%, and it will ensure that remaining items are reusable, recyclable or compostable. Take action against plastic pollution in our ocean.
Single-use plastic products and packaging are impacting our ocean, our environment and our communities. California is poised to take the lead on practical, cost-effective solutions to the growing plastic pollution crisis.
